We are committed to promoting access to, participation in and ownership of theatre by young people and as such welcomes the opportunity, where possible, to develop relationships with young peoples organisations in order to promote the benefits of theatre further to young people.
Over the last year, as part of our Education and Outreach programme, we have led the following projects:
SWITCH: We were commissioned by the Swindon Tobacco Control Partnership to deliver this hard- hitting anti- smoking workshop focusing on the manipulative power of the tobacco industry. This innovative project, supported by DVD footage (produced in-house with young people) and drama based techniques, toured to the majority of Swindon secondary schools.
SOCIAL INCLUSION PROJECT: This was a week long residency for children aged 7-11 with special educational needs. The aim of the project was to explore communication and interaction with others and to encourage self confidence using techniques developed from the work of Jenny Mosley (a pioneering educational practitioner).
ENTRY TO EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS: These weekly workshop sessions were for young people aged 16+ focusing self-confidence and team work with a view to support their search for employment.
INTRODUCTION TO DRAMA WORKSHOPS: We worked with diverse groups of young people (i.e. home schooled/SEN/disaffected young people), introducing them to drama as an artform and to inspire creative thinking.
INSET TRAINING: We have delivered several bespoke INSET training workshops for primary and secondary school teachers in Swindon. We also delivered a programme of creative learning workshops for new and experienced childcare practitioners based around our production for 3-5 year olds and their families- SPLOSH!
PHYSICAL THEATRE RESIDENCY: We worked with a group of GSCE drama students to introduce them to the approaches of physical theatre. Over the course of one week, the group worked intensively to create their own physical theatre based performance, working with an experienced practitioner and a script writer.
CAUGHT IN THE WEB: We are currently working in partnership with Create Studios and Wiltshire Police to produce a short film exposing the vulnerability of young people on the internet. The film itself is being developed in conjunction with young people, and will be screened in youth centres, schools etc across Swindon shortly.
